OUR TOWN HISTORIES STAGEDOOR PRODUCTION: Into A Dream With You - On Stage With StageDoor A Slideshow Review Of The Five Shows In 2008 : My name is Linda Chion Kenney and as founder, editor, and producer of My Paper Now I am proud to present, below, this special presentation produced in conjunction with Our Town Histories. This presentation is the fourth in a series entitled, "Something Is Eternal," which borrows its name from the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Our Town," written by Thornton Wilder. In that play the narrator reminds us that "something is eternal, and it ain't names and it ain't earth, and it ain't even the stars . . . everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal and that something has to do with human beings." In these trying times we live in, as we work through the recessionary and depressionary realities of our day, it is the good that we can do for each other that will in great part define the success of our efforts both individually and collectively. It is the reality of community theater that your participation in a production yields fruits that you can taste long after the final curtain -- in the friends you make and the quality of time you spend with your families. Indeed, with the family you were born into and in the family you become, sometimes with total strangers, as you create for the community an escape, if you will, into a world that makes them think and feel or simply just laugh and forget their cares for a spell. The lunch followed the Thanksgiving Day meal hosted by Cynthia Pinckney Ministries and both were held at the Bill Carey Boys & Girls Club in Brandon. The cluster includes: First United Methodist of Brandon, St. Andrews United Methodist of Brandon, Seffner First United Methodist, South Shore United Methodist (in Apollo Beach), Riverview United Methodist, Limona Village Chapel, and Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida De Brandon.

A Fifth "Heart-Aversary" For The Dye Family; Father Received "Gift Of Life" In 2004; Daughter's Transplant Three Years Later (Dec. 7, 2008) : Tom Dye called his fourth "heart-aversary" celebration on Dec. 7, 2008 "a celebration of life, a reminder of the gift of life from some still unknown donor." Each year the Dye family of Valrico, Fla., celebrates two "heart-aversaries." The celebration takes place the Sundays before the respective heart transplant surgeries of Tom Dye and his daugther, Stephanie. Tom's "heartday" (the day he received his donor heart) is Dec. 9, 2004. Stephanie's heartday is Sept. 8, 2007. The Dyes are believed to be the only father-daughter heart transplant recipients in the country.

Durant, Newsome and Plant City High Schools Stage Pippin On Tomlin Middle School's Grand Stage : SHOW DATES: November 20-23 and December 11-14. Thursday, Friday and Saturday night shows are at 7 p.m. Sunday shows are at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $10 General Admission, $8 Orchestra (first eight rows) and $7 Balcony. Tomlin Middle School is at 501 North Woodrow Wilson Street in Plant City, Fla., 33563. State judges will be attending the Dec. 12 show. Costumed Pets At Winthrop Yappy Hour Hosted By Happy Paws And Tails And Green Iguana (Oct. 29, 2008)

Center Place Draws Businesses, Youngsters To Halloween Horribles Parade (Oct. 26, 2008) : About 3,000 people were said to have attended the 11th Annual Halloween Horribles Parade at the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association in Brandon, Fla. Event organizers hoped to attract 800 kids to the popular event, (originally conceived by Nancy Kelley) by distributing 1,200 free tickets. Kids needed a ticket to enter, but not their parents or caregivers. (A $2 fee was printed on the ticket, but organizers decided to forego the charge to what has traditionally been a free event. The fee was to help defray costs and help support children's programming.) The parade route officially started at the entrance to the Sandy Rodriguez Center, which houses both Center Place and the Brandon Regional Library, at 619 Vonderburg Drive. Attendees were lined up outside the building and around the lake and it took 90 minutes or more for every attendee to enter, said Center Place Programming Director Dawn Galia. Area businesses and organizations were not charged to participate; they set up booths and distributed candy and other goodies of their choosing.

The event provides free physicals and immunizations to incoming students regardless of need. More than 210 children were served at the Aug. 2, 2008 event supported by a myriad of community groups, including Brandon Regional Hospital and All Children's Specialty Care Services of Brandon.

Among them were bricks laid posthumously for Camden A. White and Jozsef Varga. An informal dedication ceremony is scheduled for June 16 at 9 a.m. in front of the school. Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee is scheduled to be in attendance. His brick, too, was laid with the latest batch.

Close to 3,000 people attended, including exhibitor and visitor alike. At the Expo, lots of people were asked to describe the greater Brandon area. As one exhibitor put it, Brandon is "small enough to be friendly but large enough for your business."

Young Jr. was a man with a big heart, especially prone to helping children. "You're living large, partner," was a term he liked to use and, indeed, it signified his life as well. Friends and family say he was a tireless man from humble roots, driven to succeed, who opened his Golden Corral resturant to the community for its many functions, fundraisers and organizational and service club meetings. Young's sudden death on April 25, 2008 shocked a town that grew used to his ready smile, kind heart and giving manner. "Mother always instilled in us that friends are forever," Latham said. "She enjoyed having fun." The club was formed April 19, 2005 and had its first "event" that May. The Red Hat Society, from a handful of women going out and having fun, has grown into an international organization of thousands of women. The group's 10th anniversary fell on April 25, 2008. The tea is held annually as a fundraiser for the Brandon Care Pregnancy Center at 122 North Moon Avenue. Hillsborough's Area 5 Educators Celebrate Co-Teaching Bridge Between General And Exceptional Student Education At Winthrop Barn Event : Posted by LINDA CHION KENNEY: The "inclusion" model was center stage April 17 at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop, where an awards banquet was held for educators engaged in the co-teaching model. Their aim is to "include" or "mainstream" students with disablities into the regular education classroom. Organizers said they were heartened to see at least twice as many teachers at the banquet this year than last and hope to see even more teachers involved in co-teaching in the years ahead. Educators involved in inclusion teaching say that the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students achieve gains by striving to meet a higher expectation while general education students benefit from a teaching model that better matches teaching style to learning style.

The Dye Family Of Valrico Celebrates Two Heart Transplants In Three Years (And Three Months) : By LINDA CHION KENNEY (All Rights Reserved; Posted Dec. 9, 2007): On Dec. 9, 2004, Tom Dye underwent a heart transplant. Every year thereafter, the family has celebrated "Tom's Heartday" with a heart tree celebration for family and friends. This year's celebration took on an even more poignant tone, as Tom and Judy Dye's daughter, Stephanie, celebrated her own successful heart transplant. Stephanie received her new heart on "09-08-07," as her mother, Judy, likes to put it. Both father and daughter received their new hearts at Tampa General Hospital, becoming what is believed to be the country's only father-daughter dual heart transplants in the United States. The family, including brother, Daniel, a Bloomingdale High School freshman, is committed to raising awareness of the need for organ, tissue, and bone donors. Family and friends say the Dye's courage under fire should be an inspiration to all.

By LINDA CHION KENNEY: The Greater Brandon Community Foundation held its second annual "An Evening of Hope, Angels Among Us" dinner at the Palmetto Club in Lithia on Nov. 17, 2007. Prior to the dinner, there were about 60 Foundation Angels. Another 50 or so were added by the night's end. "These are people who give their time, talent and resources" to those in trying times, said Foundation president Anne Nymark. "It's not about necessarily writing a check," she added. Center Place Tree Lighiting (Dec. 5, 2007) : By LINDA CHION KENNEY (Posted Dec. 5): The lighting of Brandon's Christmas tree at Center Place took place on Dec. 5, furthering what has become an almost 25-year tradition. The tree is back in the lake and it's lit courtesy of Larry Cox and Cox Electric employees. Performances leading up to the lighting were delivered by Brandon Academy, Music Showcase, Tampa Bay Family Theatre, Kim Hall's School of Dance and Bev Sutherland's chorus and show choir students from Bloomingdale High School. Each year, tradition has the Ambassadors (show choir) preform its interpreation of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." The show-stopper event will be performed again for the lighting of the Christmas tree at Winthrop Town Centre in Riverview, at the corner of Bloomingdale Avenue and Providence Road. The Dec. 7 show kicks off at 6 p.m. and includes also the chorus from Symmes Elementary School. Following the lighting of the tree, the community is invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs and watch, for free, an outdoor movie at the Lawn at Winthrop, off the east wall of the Publix supermarket. The Dec. 7 show is "Home Alone." The Grass Stains at Winthrop Holiday Film Classics outdoor movie series continues with "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.) and concludes with "It's A Wonderful Life" (Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.). The event drew an impressive crowd to the Barn Theatre at Winthrop, where more than 20 artists exhibited and hundreds more came to view and aquire works and contacts. Winthrop unveiled its recycling initiatives, as conceived in great part by Sarah Sullivan, a freshman at Boston University, for her Girl Scout Gold Award. Winthrop's "Save the Species" program includes recycled city bikes "Free to Ride Winthropwide;" a public art program (using recyclable construction materials); an industrial cardboard baler; electric vehicle charging stations; and inexpensive (and earth-friendly) tin recycling receptacles for cans and paper. The Showcase Players is a theatrical troupe for teens, through age 19, in residence at Music Showcase in Brandon. Brandon Ballet Tea With The Sugar Plum Fairy : By LINDA CHION KENNEY: The Brandon Ballet each year stages "The Nutcracker," and for two years has been hosting a tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy. This year's tea was held at the River Hills Country Club in Valrico. Under the artistic direction of Alice Holden Bock and Claire Andrews, with coach/choreographer Richard Munro, the Brandon Ballet presents the holiday ballet classic Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. All performances are at Blake High School, in its state- of the-art performance theatre, at 1701 North Boulevard in Tampa, not far from the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Studio. Winthrop Yappy Hour Hosted By Happy Paws & Tails (with Mojitos) : For the 14th Yappy Hour at Happy Paws & Tails, in the Winthrop Town Centre in Riverview, at the southeast corner of Bloomingdale Avenue and Providence Road, the focus Nov. 29 was on the adoption of great pyrenees, also known as "the mountain dog." Shannon Cloversettle, who with her husband,Jim, owns trooper and lives and works at Winthrop, said the monthly Yappy Hour is the couple's way of giving back. "It's our way of giving back to the community and to help raise money for all the rescue groups we have," she said. "We wanted to raise awareness that their are dogs available for adoption."

The series continues Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. with "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." The series concludes Dec. 21 with the 7 p.m. showing of "It's A Wonderful Life." The Family Fun Fall Festival raised money for aquatic thearpy to keep his muscles loose.
