2010 MONTI Community Theater Awards were presented at Center Place on Aug. 20, 2010. Given were 28 awards determined from 144 nominations featuring work from five of theater troupes.

Carlton M. Jones, founder of the MONTI Community Theatre Awards program, celebrates the MONTI he received in the costuming category for his work on Sweeney Todd, a show staged by the company he founded with Todd Barber, Footlights Theatre Productions. Jones shared the award with Beverly Mercer for her work in Barefoot in the Park, a show staged by the company she founded with her husband, Michael, The Frenzie Life Theatre. The Fifth Annual MONTI Awards ceremony was held Aug. 20, 2010 at the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association in Brandon. The Frenzie Life Theatre took home a bevy of awards at the Fifth Annual MONTI Community Theater Awards, held Aug. 20, 2010, at Center Place. Above, the cast and crew of Dog Sees God accepts the award for Best Play production. The Frenzie also received the MONTI for Best Musical production, for its staging of I Love You Because.

Barbara Kent, for her decades-long support of Plant City Entertainment, received the MONTI Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Theater. She received the award from last year's recipient, Jennifer Jackson, who started with the company in its first year 30 years ago. Plant City Entertainment celebrated its 30th anniversary with a tribute show this year.

Remarks About Barbara Kent, Delivered By Jennifer Jackson

"The first response I received from this wonderful woman when I told her she would be honored this evening with the MONTI Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Theatre was, 'I’ve done nothing to deserve such an honor. I don’t direct, I don’t act.' I believe many in this room would disagree.

"Barbara Kent is unarguably the matriarch of Plant City Entertainment Inc. Our First Lady. She was the first face a lot of community theater enthusiasts saw when they heard that a theatre was in the making in Plant City.

"When I met Barbara she was a single working journalist mom with four teenage boys. Then, as the layers of that onion were peeled back, so much more was revealed. She was actually the single working mother of eight boys, a graduate of Plant City High School who studied journalism at the University of Florida and since retired as editor and chief of the Plant City Courier. Barbara had her family involved in theater in Homestead, Fla. When she returned to Plant City in 1980 she immediately shared a vision that Plant City needed a community theatre.

"Through the years she has worked tirelessly with only a few complaints, on everything from programs to costumes. And only twice, if I am correct, did we get her on the stage. She is the consummate theater advocate. And, when necessary, the devil’s advocate. A visionary and an encourager. She was everything a new theatre needed and is everything that sustains it. She has had faith in people who did not have faith in themselves. She saw things in them they could never see without that 'Barbara' nudge. Barbara demonstrates that there is so much more to the theater than performing and even directing, and just like Barbara, the layers of that onion, community theater, go deep, are revealing, and are rich with flavor, substance, and continual surprises.

"Barbara taught us that there are no small dreams in theater. There is work until you sweat, scream until you have no voice, laugh until your sides hurt, cry until there isn’t a tear left, standing room only, clap until your hands hurt, dreams that we all, in this room, make come true. But none have made them come more true than Barbara Kent."

Greg Summerall serves as emcee for the Fifth Annual MONTI Community Theater Awards,held Aug. 20, 2010, at the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association. In all, 24 awards were presented to actors and production staff members affiliated with 17 shows from a handful of community theater troupes operating in Eastern Hillsborough County. Summerall is shown accepting the MONTI Mask of the Theatre Award in the MONTI Hall of Fame category. He shared the award this year with Jenny Morgan.

At the show, Our Town Histories, in affiliation with MyPaperNow.com, presented its annual look back at the 2009-10 community theater season.

Allen Richardson reprises his role as the Pharoah from The Village Players production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Heather Richardson reprises her role as Belle, for which she recieved a MONTI nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. The show was staged by StageDoor Performing Arts.

Peter B. Sanders and Kimberlee Sivret reprise their roles as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett at the 2010 MONTI Community Theater Awards ceremony at Center Place. Both were nominated for MONTIs.

Kimberlee Sivret reprises her role as Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd at the 2010 MONTI Community Theater Awards ceremony. She later received the MONTI for Best Actress in a Musical.

Ruth Soucek presents the MONTI awards for Best Musical Director, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Director of a Play.
