"Ready or not, shhh, here comes Mama!" sings Ellen Kleinschmidt, as Mama Rose, in the arousing finale song in the
Riverview Little Theatre production of
Gypsy.
Gypsy premiered on Broadway in 1959 and has been revived four times. Regarded by many critics as the greatest American musical, this is the story of how a no-talented Louise Hovick rises from vaudeville and behind the shadow of her sister, Dainty June, to become the wildly successful burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee.
Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. for the July 23, 25, and 30, and Aug. 1 stagings of the Riverview Little Theatre production. The community theater troupe performs and is in residence at Riverview High School in Riverview, at 11311 Boyette Road.
The show is directed by Daron Hawkins, theater teacher at Riverview, and musical directed by Bev Sutherland, the choral teacher at Bloomingdale High School. Both schools are in the Hillsborough County School District, the nation's eighth-largest school district.
