![The Bloomingdale chapter of the international "Invisible Children" movement began as a high school club. "But we became limited in what we were allowed to do [in terms of fundraising]," said chapter president, Natalie Neville, right, with chapter vice president, Lauren Corba.
The chapter traces its beginning to their freshman year American Government teacher, Lisa Camichos, who told her students about "Invisible Children" and its mission to help the children of Uganda and to raise awareness of the humanitarian situation in Northern Uganda.
"It's just really sad that war is going on and no one knows about it," Corba said. "I want to raise awareness and do everything I can to help children who are living a life that is so unfortunate."
Added Neville: "I don't do this for myself. I do it for the kids in Uganda."
The two friends and chapter colleagues said they were proud to have raise more than $1,000 with the night's fundraiser at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop. Admission to the event, which featured four local bands, was $5 or five new or gently used books. Each book took $1 off the admission price. The cause supported is a nonprofit movement that benefits the children of war-torn Darfur. The aim also is to build awareness of the war in northern Uganda that has made soldiers of children.
