The Bloomingdale Senior High School Rajun' Bull Band takes to the halftime field on Sept. 3 for its official launching of the 2010 "British Invasion" marching band program.

The program is in recognition of the band's shining moment yet to come at year's end. John Sever's band, along with Beverly Sutherland's choral students and Su Ling's orchestra, have been invited to represent the Greater Brandon area, Bloomingdale High School, and the nation in London for the 2011 New Year's Day Parade and London Festival. The October 2009 announcement added to the reputation of the Bloomingdale band, which for 18 years has received superior ratings. Sever in turn was named Bloomingdale's 2009-10 Teacher of the Year.

The Bloomingdale High School band, orchestra, and chorus programs have been invited to perform in London at the 2011 New Year's Day Parade and London Festival. The October 2009 announcement added to the reputation of the Bloomingdale Senior High School Rajun' Bull Band (18 years of superior ratings), which also saw the naming of the band's director, John Sever, as Bloomingdale's 2009-10 Teacher of the Year.

"He does his job like nobody else," chorus director Bev Sutherland said about Sever at the time. "I respect the man so much. He's one of the smartest people I know for one thing, his intelligence. And the way he treats his kids. He's always listening, always caring. He's concerned about the total student and not just the playing ability. He wants to know what he can do for the kid instead of what the kid can do for him."

"The thing for me," Sever also said at the time, "is I keep doing the job for the kids." His philosphy: "If people focus on their job instead of on their career the career takes care of itself."

In turn, Sever has high praise for his colleagues. "One of the reasons I have the best job in the world are the people I work with. The administration, Bev Sutherland, and [orchestra director] SuLing [Caballero]."

As for the London invitation, Sever calls it "the biggest thing that's ever happened here for our music department. It's overwhelming."

Overwhelming, too, is the cost of the trip per student. The $2,900 price tag includees transportation, hotel accommodations, two meals a day, and performance entry fees. The trip is scheduled for Dec. 27, 2010 through Jan. 2, 2011.

"We represent our entire community and the nation, so going over there, to London, is a big deal," says Catrina Miller, right, about the Bloomingdale Senior High School's music department's trip to London. Miller, who is charge of the band's public relations efforts, notes that the push is on to help raise enough money so every music student who wants to can go on the trip.

The cost is $2,900 per student. As of the Sept. 3 home opener football game, some 160 students had paid their way to travel to London. "Every single person, every single person who wants to go, I want to take," Miller says. "A lot of corporations want to help us but in today's financial day and age they can't do. So every penny, every dime will help."

With Miller is Deon McFayden, president of the boosters club, and John Sever, the director of the 258-member band and Bloomingdale's 2009-10 Teacher of the Year.

"I'm really, really excited for this year's program, 'The British Invasion,' " Wilkinson says. "It's a piece of British culture and it's fitting because we're going to London for the New Year's parade."

"It's going to be awesome," Field says of the trip, "and it's going to be a really great experience."

"It's going to be one the best years Bloomingdale has ever had with its bands," Lay adds. "We have a great opportunity with the whole London parade experience."

Bev Sutherland, director of the Bloomingale High School choral program, with Billy Sullivan, director of the Rajun' Bull Marching Band's Crimson Guard, formerly known as the Crimson Dolls. "We're taking the guard to a new competitive level and we wanted to give them a more intense name," says Sullivan, who is in his second year leading the guard.
