Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Station's Open House Draws Strong Community Support (Oct. 11, 2008)
The Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Station hosted its open house on Oct. 11, 2008. The annual event coincides with National Fire Prevention Week.
Van Tisdale, chief of the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Station, at 4705 East Bloomingdale Avenue, said he has been with Hillsborough County for eight years. This is his first job as a fire chief; he was the assistant fire chief in nearby Dover. He has been fire chief for three months, he said at the Oct. 11, 2008 open house hosted by his station. "All I was hoping for was for the community to come out and get a better idea of what their fire department does and where their money goes. About 80 percent of our work is [responding to] medical [emergencies]," Tisdale said. "This is a great community. The turnout exceeded my expectations." Tisdale added that people need to recognize that "Hillsborough County strives to respond to an emergency, with a paramedic, in five to seven minutes," which many times beats the time that an ambulance can get there. "We're better equipped to respond to help you out faster," Tisdale said.
