"This has been a tough week," said Georgianna Smith, in reference the killings at Fort Hood, which have been attributed to suspect Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist. Smith noted that her son had volunteered for a tour in Iraq to replace a lieutenant who needed to go on leave. It was during that tour, on Dec. 5, 2005, that Smith lost his life. He was awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star posthumously.

"I graduated in 1951," Glenda said. "It's only natural you remember the friends that you made there. And we had very good teachers here for the most part." The teacher for her that stands out is history teacher Clifford Quinland. As she put it: "He was just a very personable teacher who took a lot of interest in the students."
The 2009 Hall Of Fame induction, run by the Brandon High School Alumni Association, took place in the school's cafeteria on Victoria Street. The old Brandon High was once part of the now-McLane Middle School campus. "This cafeteria [today]," Glenda said, "doesn't look a lot like the cafeteria we were in when we went to school."

Former Brandon High School Principal Orlan Briant was inducted into the Brandon High School Alumni Association's Hall Of Fame. Photos of the honorees, first named in 2004, adorn a wall in the school cafeteria. Joining Briant in this year's class of inductees are Nathaniel "Nat" Storms, Captain Kevin Joseph Smith, Martin Michael "Bud" Mulrennan, James Powell, and Glenda Futch Lentz. The 2009 induction cermeony was held Nov. 12.

One name that stands out if Patricia M. "Pat" Fussell. "They ought to name a wing of the school for her," Briant said. "She was maroon through and through and the things she did for the school, she was totally, totally dedicated."
Fussell was in charge, too, of the school's colorguard dancerettes, known simply as "The Squad." Briant's daughter Christy Briant was a member of the squad. Pictured at right, she graduated from Brandon in 1996. Also with Briant is his wife and granddaughter, Michelle Vance, left, and daughter, Debbie Vance, who graduated from Brandon in 1980. Michelle teaches at Brooker Elementary and graduated from Bloomingdale High in 2003.
