Helen Mulrennan Young and Earl Lennard share a warm embrace at the 2010 Brandon High School Alumni Association Grand Reunion at McLane Middle School. The middle school campus housed Brandon High School before it opened in its current location, at 1101 Victoria Street in Brandon, Fla.
Young is a member of the Mulrennan family, which owned the property that now houses Mulrennan Middle School, at 4215 Durant Road in Valrico, Fla. Lennard was superintendent of the Hillsborough County School District when the school was named for Mulrennan Young's parents.
Lennard graduated from Brandon High in 1960; Mulrennan Young, in 1948.
At the reunion were mostly old classmates, but some teachers, too. Among them was Nat Storms, who taught agriculture at Brandon High. He talked about connections, and mostly about his wife, Alice, and their growing family, and his best advice for students then and now.
Nat and Alice Storms have been married for 60 years. "We center our home around the Lord and his work," Nat Storms said. "We tried not to get tooo mad at each other when we disagreed and if we did we never went to bed mad."
Storms talked about his growing family, including six great-grandchildren, nine grandchildren, and five kids. "We always grew up with them and they grew up with us, Storms said. "Do things with your kids."
As for what he told his kids and students, Storms put it simply: "Make enough to meet your needs and control your wants and you'll get through life."
