Arlene Waldron, left, and Anne Nymark are credited as the inspiration and founding forces of the
Greater Brandon Community Foundation , which is said to have raised and distributed roughly three-quarters of a million dollars since its inception six years ago.
"Since day one this was our dream and we knew we could make it work together," Nymark said at the foundation's June 18, 2009 luncheon, at the
Bonefish Grill (1015 Providence Road, Brandon). for supporters and charity representatives. "We could never thank you enough."
At the luncheon, the foundation awarded another roughly $100,000 in grants to area charities. Representatives from those charities shared their stories, which are noted within this gallery of coverage. Nymark said she was heartened to sit back and reflect on all that the awarded charities accomplish throughout the year. "Your work makes our community a better place to live," she said.
Following the check presentations, Nymark and Waldron took another moment to reflect on the foundation's success. "We knew the people in the community would make it happen," Nymark said. Added Waldron: "You can't outgive Brandon. If there's a need in the community, and people know about it, they will find an answer to that need."
The foundation, Waldron added, "created the vehicle through which people can give in their own ways." It also is the vehicle through which people can heal. "We had a man who lost his job, was diagnosed with cancer, and whose wife was killed in a car accident," Waldron said. "She was a teacher and had a collection of books that through the foundation her husband was able to donate, which helped him with the healing process. And this is just one of the many stories we've heard over the years."
