![On her way to the podium to receive the coveted S.L. "Spuds" Clements Award is the 2010 recipient, Flora Temoin.
In presenting the award, Center Place Executive Director Dawn Galia had these words to say:
“The S.L. ‘Spud’ Clements Award is given to an individual or organization that has made significant contributions to Center Place, either monetarily or through the giving of time and efforts unselfishly.
“Recognition and appreciation can be shown in many ways – common courtesy, smiles, greetings, listening to someone’s ideas and actually using them, and many more. You want the people you are recognizing to feel that their efforts make a difference.
“This year’s award will be presented to a person whom I have had the honor of getting to know on a personal and professional level, whose efforts have made a difference!
“I met this person three years ago when I was hired by Center Place to be the coordinator. This person made me feel welcome from day one. I can always count on this person to drop everything and be available on a moment’s notice. I can call this person any time during the day or evening and they are always happy to answer any of my questions. This person is not only here for Center Place and the children, but I have poured out my heart to his person many times and this person is always there to support me. As the saying goes, ‘No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another.’ This person is always there to lighten the load.
“This person has given many, many hours of time and love of the arts to Center Place. All you need to say is that, ‘It is for the children!’ and this person will bend over backwards to please.
“This person has donated her time on numerous committees at Center Place: Bunco For The Kids, Wild Dame Night (the dessert room was her specialty), and the [annual Center Place] Arts Gala. She is the Queen of Shrink Wrap! She also has served on our board of directors, from 2005 to 2008. The Center Place children’s programming is her number one priority. She loves to the see the smiles on their faces as they watch a live theater performance. Center Place knows that the arts are much more than just fun ‘extra’ activities for kids. We know that participation in the arts opens up children’s worlds and minds. Just ask her, she will tell you, how important the arts are to a child.
“She loves Cruisin’ Coconut Rum and has the classiest wardrobe that I have ever seen. I always wonder if she wears high heels while exercising! She is always smiling and has a wonderful sense of humor. I haven’t been here long enough to see her Italian temper flare, but I hear it can happen!
“This person started volunteering at Center Place in 2005 and continues to do so as chair of our Pat’s Corner Gift Shop [named for Patricia B. Odiorne]. She has given our gift shop a new look and has taken it to a new level. She does a fantastic job with purchasing the merchandise and always has wonderful displays. Pat’s Corner is one of Brandon’s best-kept secrets. She has organized new volunteer programs. She always takes the time to let the volunteers know how much she appreciates them at a yearly luncheon and now we have a quarterly volunteer breakfast brainstorming session. She is always there to listen to their ideas and their problems. She has set up the boutique at numerous patron parties, which is an endeavor in itself.
“With the hustle of the Energizer Bunny, she permeates enthusiasm and leadership. I would like to say, ‘Thank you,’ to a woman of action and not just words. In introducing the 2010 Patricia B. Odiorne Scholarship winner, Kazor offered these remarks:
“Patricia B. Odiorne was a dedicated servant of her community. Her creative leadership and tireless efforts played a major role in enabling Center Place to become a true beacon of the arts in Eastern Hillsborough County. Pat was one of Center Place’s greatest ambassadors and it is in her honor that this scholarship is named.
“The committee of four members reviewed the many applications that were received. We chose six applicants to personally interview. We spoke with a future graphic designer, medical professionals, lawyer, mathematician, and actor.
“Our winner tonight is a student at Bloomingdale High School. She awed us with her scholastics, having a 3.9 grade-point average, and hours of community service. It was her passion for the perofmring arts that impressed us the most. Paige Snyder is a four-year member and current president of the Thespian Honor Society [chapter at her school]. She has been an acting coach at “All About The Arts” children’s theater for three years and attended a workshop at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. This is where she will be attending [college] in the fall.
“Paige told us that she has always known she wanted to be an actor, since she was a munchkin in the Wizard of Oz. She plans on expanding her knowledge of the art of acting and using those skills to inspire and generate passion for the arts in our next generation.
“It is with great honor we present the Patricia B. "Its iridescent, with sparkles and glitter," which, he said, is about that moment one "captures creativity."
About the "spark of creativity," Manley said, "it happens internally. It happens in your mind. It happens in your heart."
Manley started painting his work at the New Beginnings event at Center Place on March 19, 2010.
Manly discussed his art in an interview at the "Believe in the Arts" fundraising arts gala.
"In sculpting it's called, 'molding.' In painting it's called, 'modeling.' It's the same process, but different," Manley said. "In sculpting you take away levels [of matter]. In painting, you add levels. It's called, 'subtractive' and 'additive.' That's the difference."
Manley, a former Teacher of the Year at Armwood High School, where he teaches art, continued: "When you look at a painting, you're looking at the top coat, the last thing that the artist puts on the canvas. As an artist, you really do work backwards to the foreground."
As for his students, Manley said many times the talent is so apparent to him, it just takes a bit of disovery for the student to realize it, too. "Sometimes I'm not teaching skills," Manley said.
