The Center Place 2009 "Spice up the Arts" patron party with its "Havana Nights" theme, complete with salsa dancing and a demonstration of the art of cigar rolling, was held April 25, 2009 at the Pepin Hospitality Centre, a venue large enough to handle the over-flow Brandon crowd. Announced at the party were the 2009 recipients of the Patricia B. Odiorne Scholarship and the S.L. "Spuds" Clements Award.

The printed program for the 2009 Center Place "Havana Nights" Patron Party has this to say about the award:

"It is difficult to separate Spud Clements "the man" from Spud Clements "the politician," but where Center Place was concerned Spud's untiring support far surpassed his political obligations. He was truly a servant of his community, but to those who knew him, it was obvious that Center Place held a special place in his heart.

"Perhaps Spud had a vision of what a vital role Center Place woudl paly in our burgeoning community. Whenever Center Place needed held and support he ws directly and personally available. Spud spearheaded efforts to secure state grants for Center Place that kept us financially stable through our lean years and helped to furnish our new facility. He kept his significant contributions in the background while he fondly watched the Center grow and flourish. The smile on his face when the building was opened was not for his own involvement, but rather reflected the opportunities that he knew Center Place woudl have to serve out growing community.

"The S.L. Spuds Clements Award is given to an individual or organization that has made significant contributions to Center Place either monetarily or through giving of time and efforts unselfishly."

John and Kay Sullivan are this year's recipients of the S.L. "Spuds" Clements Award.

The printed program for the 2009 Center Place "Havana Nights" Patron Party has this to say about Patricia "Pat" Odiorne:

"Center Place is dedicated to promoting the fine arts and civic involvement to people of all ages. Established in 1976, the Center was created through the love of community and the dedication of area leaders and residents, and key among them was Patricia Odiorne.

"One could fill a book with Pat's wide-reaching civic involvement and many accomplishements. She was a dedicated servant of her community. Pat encouraged others to become invovled and make Brandon a better place to live and raise a family. She served on numerous boards and chaired hundreds of committees for a number of organizations, but those who knew her knew that Center Place held a special place in her heart. Pat was a giant at heart and a driving force behind Center Place.

"Pat nurtured the Center from concept to vision to reality. SHe maintained a constant effort to raise the level of artistry, professionalism, and opportunity for all that were interested in teh arts and civic involvement. Her creative leadership and tireless efforts played a major role in enabling Center Place to become a true beacon of the arts in Eastern Hillsborough County.

"The artistry of Pat's life will continue through this scholarship. Pat was one of Center Place's greatest ambassadors and it is in her honor that this scholarship is named. Through this Patricia B. Odiorne Scholarship, she will continue enriching and inspiring lives, providing opportunity, and making the Greater Brandon area a better place to live."

"This is kind of a natural progression for me," said Brunt, who added that he fell in love with cigars as a kid. "My neighbor used to smoke cigars. I would do his yard work and smell them."

Brunt said later on in life he sold cigars online for 10 years. Rolling cigars, he added, "is a natural progression for me."

Made with natural ingredients, you would think cigars would be healthy, someone said. Answered Brunt: "They are healthy. They take stress away."
