Cindy Miller-Ray penned the show on stage this month at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico, Fla. A collection of monologues and song- and-dance numbers, collectively known as
Confessions of a Reluctant Ballerina, the show stars Miller-Ray with the help of her daughter, Sky, and friends, from left, Carlton Jones, Pedro Amaral, Ryan Barber, Todd Barber, Derek Abbott, Doug Buffaloe, Tyler Dowdy, Billy Anderson, and Domin Pazo. The show is directed by Miller-Ray's brother, Thom Miller, also a long-time community theater thespian.
Show dates are Oct. 16-17 and 23-24. Curtain time is 8 p.m. The James McCabe Theater is at 506 Fifth Street, Valrico, Fla.
This is what Miller-Ray has written to friends about her show:
This show is truly bits and pieces of me. It’s an eclectic grab bag of characters that I have developed over the years along with observations from my own life. The names have been changed in some cases to protect the innocent. I discuss childhood, identity, broken hearts, disappointment, stress and time, weight loss and gain, middle school in 2009, mammograms and breast cancer ,and finally, Les Miserables
. I revisit some old friends -- Vida Beatrice Beatrice Mae McGehee, who started out in 1981 as 'the young Shakespearean actress' and my Julie Andrews impersonation, which was born about 1988. We also meet some new friends -- Little Cindy, as a five-year-old; the Cat Whisperer; and Star Lee Ray.
The show is 'multi-visual.' Nine scenes are live and seven have been filmed and will be shown during scene changes. [The video is by Executive Producer Jayson Martinez of
No More Talk Productions]
So don't expect 'down' time! There will be a 15-minute intermission. I consider the show rated somewhere between PG and PG-13.
