Connie Smaldone Named Honorary Mayor Of Brandon; Bid Supports Kids' Charities (July 4, 2009)
In the year of the Great Recession the three candidates for Honorary Mayor of Brandon collectively raised $22,529.24 for charity, a final tally that was taken hours before the start of the Brandon Fourth of July Parade.
The candidates and their representatives met at the offices of B. Lee Elam at the corner of Lumsden Road and Parsons Avenue, which also is the official start of the annual parade.
Moments after the tally is taken, the winner is announced on the sign outside Elam’s office.
“I had a lot of fun,” said Connie Smaldone, who rode in the parade after her victory as the 2009 Honorary Mayor of Brandon. “And now I’m going to take a nap!”
This year’s race included Smaldone and candidates James Jensen and Barbara Jones-Keplinger. The race officially begins on June 1 and the candidate who raises the most money for charity up to the morning of the parade is “voted” into office.
Smaldone replaces Tammy Holmberg, the outgoing honorary mayor who was recognized with a roast July 1 at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop.
