The 2009 Hillsborough County Fair held a costume contest for goats and their owners on the fair's final day, Nov. 8. With the contest judges, Betty Jo Tompkins and Bob Der, are the winning contestants, from left, Rachel Kasson (and Zena), Jessica Switzer (and Tibby), Lyra Gaboardi (and Pasafe), Justin Ferrell (and Winky), and Kyle Gustavson (and Demi). Tompkins is past president of the fair; Der is the current president.

Durant High School student Dakota Moore, left, and his goat, "Patty-Cakes," who earlier at the Hillsborough County Fair won grand champion for her breed. With Moore are his friends, from left, Zach Ceto, Jessica Dixon, and Amanda Margison. Family friend Linda Van Cleve said the name of the entry was "The Devil Made Me Do It." Added Van Cleve: "The devil would be his mother!"

Keaton Grady and his goat, Imala, both dressed as Freedom FFA members.

Kyle Gustavson entered his goat, Demi, in the contest as "G.I. Goat." Said Gustavson: "My stepdad's retired military and I had the [uniform] around the house. I thought it would be pretty cool and we could match."

Back to the '50s for Jessica Switzer and her goat, Tibby. The two took home a top prize in the goat-owner costume contest. "I went to Party City and was looking for different costumes and found the poodle skirt," she said.

Chrissy Mariner and her goat, Eva, dressed as the "Hula Goat."
"My dad went to Hawaii for his honeymoon and they watched a lot of hula dancers and they brought back pictures," Mariner said. "I loved it."

Jimmy Chupp and his goat, Demi, dressed as Scooby-Doo. "Scooby-Doo was a classic cartoon back when I was growing up," Chupp said. "I thought [the costume] would be cool."

"I was going to dress up as a showgirl for Halloween and I didn't get to," Totten said. She got her chance at the Hillsborough County Fair, with her goat, Coco Chanel.
