Close to 1,000 attendees were reported at the FishHawk Relay For Life at Newsome High School in Lithia, Fla. Some 41 teams registered for the overnight fundraiser that took place on the same weekend as Relays at Bloomingdale and Riverview high schools, both within seven miles of Newsome. A fourth fundrasier, the South Shore Relay For Life, also was held the same weekend, at Lennard High School in Ruskin, Fla.
Even with four Relays in one weekend, the four high school events collectively raised at least more than $400,000 for the American Cancer Society and its fight against cancer. Money raised benefits the search for a cure and support programs for cancer survivors and their caregivers.
In the history of the FishHawk Relay, there has never been a "sapphire club" winner, which is given to the team that raises more than $15,000. But the Newsome High Class of 2012, pictured above, left the March 27-28 Relay less than $500 off the mark and with the expectation that they indeed will hit the mark without a doubt. Teams have several months to continue raising money for the cause and members of the Class of 2012 team vowed to bring home the sapphire within the coming weeks.
"That's right, Randall!" Newsome student Lyssa Seiden said good-naturedly to the members of the Randall Middle School team, which historically takes home the top prize for top fundraising team and feeds its students into Newsome, which is adjacent to the middle school. "Not this year!" added Seiden, who vowed: "We're going to raise the $15,000." Relay organizers vowed to recognize the team at Newsome as soon as they got word the mark had been reached.
