![Beverly Mercer notes the "many factors to consider" in hand-crafting and compiling the headdresses and masks used in the Bat Boy production, chief among them "cost, availability, functionality, craftsmanship, and time."
She gives credit to Jenny Morgan and Katrina Korte for stepping up to the plate with their creativity. Also, to Karen Dowdy, Rachel Comstock and Shane Ross for thier contributions to the process.
"I was picking up supplies to make the headdresses we had decided to build when I noticed the feather aisle," Mercer says. "There were generic face masks and other craft supplies on the same aisle. I grabbed a few items to see what we could come up with if the headdresses didn't work."
Mercer said she was struck by the "really lovely feather combinations" that were on display, but also by their hefty price tags, "especially when thinking about using them for approximately 20 masks."
"But I thought making one was at least worth a try, just to see what we could come up with," Mercer adds. "On my way to the checkout counter I noticed some really pretty flowers in nice, earthy colors. Great texture, great colors, and realized these would work instead of the more expensive feathers."
With this thought in mind, Mercer returned to The Frenzie costume shop where she told Morgan about her idea to use the flowers. "And she just took off with it," Mercer says. "Well, actually, I think she first said, 'You want to do what?' But then she dove right in and we loved the result."
"By the end of the process," Mercer adds, "Katrina [Korte] and Jenny [Morgan] had created some real works of art, with Karen Dowdy, Rachel Comstock and Shane Ross contributing to the effort.
Mercer credits "Jenny's creative eye" and "no-fear attitude" for "her ability to use everyday items to create shapes" and Korte's "creativity and attention to detail" for enabling the project to take hold and take off.
"I think the average time spent on each mask was about eight hours," Mercer says.
