Thom Miller, as Father Flynn, takes to the stage with a four-member cast in The
Frenzie Life Theatre production of John Patrick Shanley's
Doubt, A Parable. The Tony award-winning play also received a Pulitzer Prize.
"The whole play is a parable, as the title states, regarding the subject of doubt in general," Miller says. "Do we sometimes come to conclusions with certainty, based on very little information? Is it okay to be in doubt?"
The 2004 play, written by John Patrick Shanley, is set in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1964, at a time when "the winds of political change" sees the enrollment of the Catholic school's first African-American student, Donald Muller, who is set to graduate in June.
The play, according to the show's program, "tells the story of a charismatic priest, Father Flynn, who is trying to up-end the school’s strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-gloved principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline."
When doubt is raised by Sister James, a young nun at the school, concerning Father Flynn's attentions to Donald, Sister Aloysius takes on Father Flynn armed with a moral certainty that defies absolute certainty. (
