Artist Frederic Murphy specializes in "mostly florals, still life, but I like to do everything." He uses oil, but also pastels. Why is he an artist? "Well, I was born to be," he said. "As a child I was always drawing, painting." He started later than most, he said, going to school in his late '20s. He studied at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore and with private instructors "Albert Handel, David Lafel and Sherry McGraw."

"You tend to gravitate most to one type of art," said Susan Foster. "As an artist, I've gravitated to oil in a realistic manner. I love the sensation of the paint on the canvas. You can do so much with it, you can move it. It's all about value and edges."

"I paint things the way they look, like a realist," said artist Susan Covert. "I paint the real thing. It's just part of who I am. I like to observe daily life and the world as I see it and that's what interests me, to record that on canvas with paint. That's it. And that I can even do it. I give all the glory to God that I'm able to do it. I think he's the one who brings me to the places I need to paint."

Artist Katie Dobson Cundiff's white roses, preserved in paint. Dobson Cundiff for years has run her illustration and T-shirt company but her passion has always been to paint.
"It's necessary, when you have the passion in you," she said. "It's really not a choice. If you don't do it, you're miserable, you're not living your life then, what you're supposed to be doing."
She noted that there's something inside the creative person that some people don't recognize. "It takes more than talent," she added. "It takes more than an education in the arts. It takes knowing that if you have a passion you have to go for it. And it doesn't matter when you go for it. I got started later, after my family was raised."

"I was pulled to art at a very early age by my father [Steven Gaston Dobson], who was an illustrator," said oil painter Katie Dobson Cundiff. "There's wasn't a day in my life where art didn't occupy some moment." Dobson Cundiff has a T-shirt company named "Katie Does Orginials." Visit: www.katiedids.com. Artist Norton Rock specializes in "mostly figures," in mixed-media. He's been working with a new kind of media and style he called "pushing." As he put it" "You always have to keep pushing."

"We lead separate lives," said Jacqui Rock, with her husband, Norton. "When he does his art he's solitary and moody. I stay clear of him. You have to make your own life when you're married to an artist if the marriage is going to succeed." She added: "I love his art work." And she doesn't shy away from giving him her "honest critique, which he doesn't always want to hear." As for Norton, when he was asked, "What makes for a good marriage?" he replied jokingly: "A poor memory."

Artist Jim Jamison said his wife, Kathryn, "forced him into [art] five years ago." As he put it: "She badgered me." He added: "I wish she had done it sooner because we're having a lot of fun. It's something we're doing together and it's a real good reason to be outside in Florida." Jim Jamison's painting behind him is a view of the Big Bend area, just before the Panhandle, south of Tallahassee and west of Gainesville. HIs wife takes a different angle. Jim's view is different than Kathryn's view .
