The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Mounted Posse colorguard, at the fundraiser horse show March 14, 2009 at the
Hillsborough County Fairgrounds . The day would mark also the official recognition of the siting of the HCO Sheriff's Mounted Posse Arena at the year-old fairgrounds, at
4810 East State Road 60 , just 5 miles east of Brandon at the intersection of Sydney-Washer Road and Highway 60.
The
non-profit posse , founded in 1965 under Sheriff Malcolm Beard and run by deputies and volunteers, assists the Sheriff's Office in obtaining crime-scene evidence and conducting lost-person searches in wooded areas that off-road vehicles cannot access. The posse also assists in natural disasters, conducts community awareness demonstrations at area elementary schools and participates in community parades. Posse members perform without compensation and tend to the housing, care and feeding of their privately owned horses.
