!["It's truly a grassroots effort," said Hillsborough County Fair Manager Tom Umiker, with fellow fair board member Betty Jo Tompkins, of both the establishment and growth of the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds off Sydney-Washer Road, just east of Brandon, Fla. "Volunteers are instrumental." As for the community, he added, "we hope they know [the fairgrounds are] part of the community and will be a major part of the community in the near future." The fairgrounds debuted with the 2008 Hillsborough County Fair; this year's fair returns in November. Coming soon: ground-breaking on a building to showcase handicapped equestrians in the off-season, and livestock during fair season. The Hillsborough County Fair Board of Directors, Umiker said, "manages the ground and the facility, which we rent out for non-fair events, such as trade shows, RV shows and you name it."
The facility was built on a former phosphate mine, built with phosphate trust fund money and donations. Recently, CIT funding was received from Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation.
"Our lifeline is the accessiblity to the community," Umiker said. "[This location] is so perfect for the fair. We have an audience sitting on one side of the site and the agricultural part is sitting on the other side." But while the fairgrounds are suitable for agricultural interests, the aim is to showcase the arts and history as well. The day would mark also the official recognition of the siting of the HCO Sheriff's Mounted Posse Arena at the year-old fairgrounds, at 4810 East State Road 60 , just 5 miles east of Brandon at the intersection of Sydney-Washer Road and Highway 60.
The non-profit posse , founded in 1965 under Sheriff Malcolm Beard and run by deputies and volunteers, assists the Sheriff's Office in obtaining crime-scene evidence and conducting lost-person searches in wooded areas that off-road vehicles cannot access. The posse also assists in natural disasters, conducts community awareness demonstrations at area elementary schools and participates in community parades. Posse members perform without compensation and tend to the housing, care and feeding of their privately owned horses.
