"This year is going to be a critical year for these reasons, the economy's going south and we're curious to see how our Brandon community will respond to the needs of their neighbors," said ECHO board member Don Pate, who for years has kept tally of deliverables at the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
He was at it again this year (May 10, 2008) at the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO) in Brandon, at 507 North Parsons Ave. "Last year we collected 116,000 pounds of food," he added. "This year we're hoping for the same, if not more, because there's a great need out there that we've observed."
Later that day he reported the final tally: more than 118,800 pounds of food sorted, with up to another 5,000 pounds expected from the outlying postal districts by May 12. As Pate put it during his nine-hour day keeping tabs: "Knowing the Brandon community, they'll come through. They always do."
