Improvement League of Plant City hosted on Jan. 17, 2009 the group's 23rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. This year's theme, "The Champion of a Dream" drew a large crowd, many of whom were there, too, to celebrate the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama. But Liesta Sykes, vice president of the league, said it was her hope not to downplay the significance of the commemoration. Dr. King's legacy, she said, "is his legacy" and Barack Obama has his legacy. "The two have separate paths," she added, but it was hard for many of the paradegoers not to express the obvious; that, as Sykes herself acknowledged, "that while the one path may have led to the other, this weekend is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s weekend." Indeed, the parade was just one part of the
Plant City Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Arts Festival , a part of the Tampa Bay Area Collaboration celebrating African American Culture in partnership with the
Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival .
