Their aim was to make at least 1,500 cards to send to deployed troops so that they, in turn, could send the holiday cards back to their friends and family members with personalized greetings written inside. The event, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., drew more than 100 attendees; and way before noon the goal had been reached. By the end of the day, the final tally was 2,069 hand-crafted cards for the troops.

"You can hate the war but you can't hate the people who are there serving on the request of their country," said Tammy Holmberg, with her son Luke. "And you can't ignore it. You can't act like they're not there. This is our way of saying as a community, 'You have not been forgotten and we're praying for your safe return.' "

Cathy Carcia with her daughter, Gabrielle. Garcia said her husband, Rey, is on his eighth tour of duty. "Most have been nine days or 120 days," she said. "This is his eighth one and its six months." Rey Garcia is in the Air Force and serves with the 1st Joint Communication Squadron of the Joint Communications Support Element.

"The troops get the cards that are made here and they fill them out, write letters inside, and send them back to their family and friends," said Toni Burkett, right, with Phyllis Leconte. Burkett said she and her friends attended the Oct. 4 "Stampin' Up for the Troops" event to support the troops. As she put it: "Anything to help out them and their families."

"For us, this is every day life," Tina Hill said about her and her children's time away from their husband and father, Mike Hill, who serves with the Air Force in the Arabian Peninsula. "We live it. We just want to make other people aware we still have family far away from us doing things for their country." With Hill are her daughters Kaela, left, and Marina, both students at Burns Middle School.

"We're all doing fine and everybody is putting together a lot of help to make cards for all the troops," sixth-grader Kaela Hill said she would like to tell her father, Mike, who serves in the Arabian Peninsula. One more thing, she added: "We miss him."

"I miss him and I'm proud of him and I hope he's doing well out there," seventh-grader Marina Hill said she would like to tell her father, Mike Hill, who is serving in the Arabian Peninsula.

Angel Ledesma, left, is in the Army and serves as Rear Detachment Commander for the 1st Joint Communication Squadron of the Joint Communications Support Element.
