Principal Cheryl Dafeldecker, with students from her MOSI Partnership School, has a special interest in the Hillsborough County School District's annual Mark Dafeldecker Safety Patrol Picnic. The event is named in honor of Cheryl Dafeldecker's husband, who died unexpectedly from a massive brain stroke at age 49 in 2005.
"The picnic is a way for us, as principals, to give back to the kids," Cheryl Dafeldecker said. "They work so hard, in the cold, in the rain, in the heat, protecting our schools."
Mark Dafeldecker was principal of Northwest Elementary School when he died in Milwaukee, Wisonsin, attending his daughter's soccer match with her University of South Florida team. Cheryl Dafeldecker, then the principal of Cannella Elementary School, was on the trip as well.
The School Board voted to name the picnic after Mark, who also served as principal of Palm River Elementary School, "because he loved it so much," said Cheryl Dafeldecker, who met her husband when the two were teachers at Witter Elementary School. "My mother said, 'You had your frogs, this is your prince."
Dafeldecker said it is fitting to link her husband's name to the annual picnic for safety patrol officers. "It was something near and dear to his heart," she said. "Every day he was about the kids."
