Campaign manager Bob Bolton, with Connie Smaldone, at her June 20, 2009 fundraising event at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop.
Smaldone's campaign for Honorary Mayor of Brandon is dedicated to raising money for children's charities. Smaldone hosted a fashion show featuring local merchants and presenting representatives from the charities she has designated as beneficiaries, including
A Kid's Place of Tampa Bay in Brandon (which held a
grand opening on April 3); the newly formed
Brandon chapter of the
All Children's Hosptial Guild; and the local facilities of the
Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA: Campo Family YMCA; Brandon Family YMCA; YMCA Camp Christina and FishHawk Ranch YMCA Express.
"I wanted to promote A Kid's Place and the All Children's guild because they're new charities in town and people don't know who they are, why they are, and what services they provide," Smaldone said. "My goal is to tie all three of them together because they can help each other. The All Children's Speciality Center has services that can help kids at A Kid's Place. The kids at A Kid's Place, which temporarily houses children and siblings taken from abusive situations, can take part in activities at the YMCA, which is more than just a gym [in that it provides scholarships to children in need]. And in turn the YMCA benefits from a big event in July at FishHawk that allows the Y to provide school supplies and necessities to children in need."
Area businesses involved in the fashion show event were
Bella Garden in FishHawk; Downtown Divas in Winthrop; Premier Designs Jewelry; Isabella Boo (young children's clothing); Perfect Prom and Party;
Ice It by Bebe Z (chrystalized active wear); Chick-fil-A, Lake Brandon Village; Cork 'n Olive, Brandon; and Arbonne International, Leslie Humphrey.
The Honorary Mayor of Brandon title goes to the candidate each year who raises the most money for charity. The race kicks off on June 1 and by July 4, the morning of the Fourth of July Parade, the candidate who presents the most money earned is officially "sworn" in. Both the race and the parade are run by the Roundtable Charities of Greater Brandon, Inc., more commonly known as the Community Roundtable and formerly known as the President's Roundtable.
