![Commitee Chair Laura Wyatt had this to say at the opening cermonies for the 2010 Plant City Relay For Life:
"This is my fifth year being involved with the American Cancer Society [Relay For Life] and I would like to tell you how your generously donated funds are spent.
"Your donations help support education, to help people learn the importance of early detection and prevention by encouraging screenings for breast, prostate, and colon cancer. Your donations also support advocacy, by allowing for the campaigning for important legislative movements. Your donations are vital to cnntinue groundbreaking research. Forty-two Nobel Prize Laureates have been supported by Relay funds, which led to discoveries like the marrow transplant and Gleeve.
"Your donations are also so important to help fund the many resources provided by the American Cancer Society's patient services group. These services include Look Good, Feel Better; Road to Recovery; Man to Man; and the Hope Lodge, which is located right next to [the H. Lee] Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. These phenomenal resources are provided anytime to anyone and there is someone to speak with 24 hours a day seven days a week by calling 1-800-ACS-2345 or visiting the American Cancer Society on the web.
"Your contribution are the reason the American Cancer Society has been able to do so much in the fight against cancer. Thank you teams, survivors, committee [members], and Plant City for all of your support. !["This time last year I was undergoing chemotherapy [for breast cancer]," said Linda Flagg, with her husband, Tom. "Every time I had a treatment a grade level brough us meals. I'm telling you, this [Pinecrest Elementary School] is my family."
"I don't know how people do it without a support system," Flagg added. "Some of these people I've known for 22 years."
Cancer, the Flaggs said, is a humbling experience. "When you first find out it knocks you to your knees," Linda Flagg said. "It really does. Then you have to have a positive outlook. You just really appreciate things a lot more when you go through something like this."
Flagg noted, too, how her students kept her going. "They made me want to get up and go to work," she said. "They would send cards to the house. One father told me his daughter came home on the last day of school crying. He told me, 'She's upset because she's not going to know how you'll be doing over the summer.' "
Her advice to other cancer patients? "Know your body and how it will react to chemotherapy."
