Brandon Eagles High School Marching Band Director Melanie Driscoll with Len Gonzalez, the band's percussion director, at the school's Sept. 19, 2008 home game against the Armwood High School Hawks. In her first year as a band director, Driscoll, who earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Florida, said she chose "Wicked" for her 99-member band (including colorguard) because "it's my absolutely favorite musical of all time." Added Driscoll: "I figured if I love it so much the kids would love it, too. I thought it would be good for my first year teaching." Driscoll said she knew in middle school that she wanted to be a band director. "I had amazing band directors growing up, one in middle school and two in high school," she said. "And an amazing, awesome private flute teacher for 10 years, Vera Guimaraes." Gonzalez, a graduate of Florida State University, has been a music instructor for 25 years.

"I chose 'Phantom of the Opera' for the kids," said Lauren Howe, director of the 96-member Armwood High School Marching Hawk Band. "They really wanted to do a 'Phantom of the Opera' show and I wanted to give them something they woudl enjoy playing." Howe, a graduate of the University of South Florida, is in her first year teaching. Both Howe and Melanie Driscoll, director of the Brandon Eagles High School Marching Band, are in their first year teaching. "It helps to have someone around in the same situation," Howe said. "We formed a friendship because of that."
