Week two of Hillsborough County high school football brought Spoto to Bloomingdale, where the Spartans handed the Bulls a 25-12 defeat on their home turf. The two teams came into the face-off 0-1 in regular season play. Spoto stands now at 1-1; Bloomingdale, 0-2. A view from the stands, however, saw both sides victorious as the schools respective band leaders, Christian Finch at Spoto and Jon Severt at Bloomingdale, reported strong performances by their students.

"Being a drum major is the most powerful thing you can feel," said Shelby Spalter, center, with fellow Bloomingdale High School Rajun Bull Band drum majors Tracy Mare, left, and Cally Bastin. "The clapping and hearing the band, they're so loud, it's great!"

What's it like to be a drum major?

"Seriously, it's the best feeling in the world," Mare said. "When you get done with the show and you hear everybody clapping, I can't describe it. It's amazing."

Added Bastin: "Being part of anything like this, it's so cool. It's like a big family. It really is."

Bloomingdale High School Band Director Jon Sever said his 253-member band and colorguard "is a really good group of people. It's the band, they're the ones who make it. I just kind of steer it every once in awhile." This year's show, "Southern Style and Grace," opens with Lynyrd Skynrd's "Freebird." Sever is starting his fifth year with the Rajun Bull Marching Band.

Spoto High School Marching Band Director Christian Finch has been with the school since its opening three years ago. This year's program, "Outlaw," features the Aaron Coplan "Billy the Kid Ballet" music from 1938. "I wanted to present them with a show that was going to be challenging and that they could learn from," Finch said. "It's quality music and we were able to have the show arranged for us to suit our band. It gives them an opportunity to be successful. Being a smaller band, we can go out there and compete with the larger bands and be successful." Before becoming a charter member of the Spoto staff, Finch taught at Randall Middle School in Lithia.
