Each year the Bloomingdale Senior High School
Rajun' Bull Band ends the school year with a Prism concert. With an emphasis on skill, talent, and fun, members from the different sections of the band don costumes in keeping with their respective musical selections, such as the zombies from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Dorothy (and friends) from "The Wizard of Oz."
Dressing up to play, says band member Erin Johnson, "gives you a chance to show your personality."
"To me, they always want to do their best," says Deon McFayden, president of the Rajun' Bull Band Boosters club of die-hard band parents. "The kids know they're representing this band, this school, and this year they've done really, really well."
Indeed, John Sever's band, along with Beverly Sutherland's choral students and Su Ling's orchestra, have been invited to represent the Greater Brandon area, Bloomingdale High School, and the nation in London for the
2011 New Year's Day Parade and London Festival. The October 2009 announcement added to the reputation of the Bloomingdale band program, which this year also saw the naming of Sever as Bloomingdale's 2009-10 Teacher of the Year. The band for 18 years has received superior ratings.
"He does his job like nobody else," Sutherland said about Sever at the band's March 6 fundraiser. "I respect the man so much. He's one of the smartest people I know for one thing, his intelligence. And the way he treats his kids. He's always listening, always caring. He's concerned about the total student and not just the playing ability. He wants to know what he can do for the kid instead of what the kid can do for him."
"The thing for me," Sever said, "is I keep doing the job for the kids." His philosphy: "If people focus on their job instead of on their career the career takes care of itself." His take on his colleagues: "One of the reasons I have the best job in the world are the people I work with. The administration, Bev Sutherland, and Su Ling."
