Ready for the final lap of the 2010 Relay For Life Of Seffner - Dover are the remaining participants of the overnight fundraiser held May 14-15 at Burnett Middle School in Seffner, Fla.
Participants had just learned that the Seffner-Dover Relay had broken its all-time record for its four years as a Relay event. Each year the event has grown and expectations are high for next year when the Relay is expected to be housed at a high school for the first time.
The event has been held at Burnett Middle School, where this year lights were donated by
Dallas 1 Construction and transported for no fee by
Sunbelt Rentals.
The 2010 Seffner-Dover Relay raised more than $25,000, beating last year's collections by some $8,000. The 2009 Relay had been in question due to the lower turnout that the event drew, in large part because it was not affiliated with a high school and thus did not garner the support from high school teams and clubs that other Relays traditionally enjoy. The
Greater Seffner Chamber of Commerce stepped in to ensure the 2009 Relay took place.
"I come from this community and I couldn't be more proud than I am right now," said Amanda Lucas, a Seffner native and the chair of the 2010 Relay, before the final lap. And to those participants who lasted overnight, Lucas added: "You really embodied the spirit of Relay For Life. Cancer never sleeps and neither do we!"
