Summer Fest 2010 at Winthrop featured a free Father's Day outing for families. Food, freebies, and activities for kids highlighted the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce's second annual event showcasing area businesses, services, and restaurants.

It didn't escape Donna Lee Fore that the 2010 Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce Summer Fest happened to coincide with Father's Day. She, too, has a father she wanted to visit but something told her tthat he day would be golden for a strong turnout at the event's Winthrop venue.

And she was right.

Vendors and visitors said the event offered an opportunity for families in tight economic times to spend the day together with offerings of free food and free activities for kids.

As for her own father, Fore said she had no problem. She said he told her: "You're wondering if you should spend the day with me or, on the Hallmark card day they call Father's Day, get out there and promote your business? Hello, I'll see you Saturday."

Fore serves as the chamber's treasurer. At Summer Fest, she promoted her Mary Kay business as well as P.F. Auto Glass, a company she runs with her husband, Pat.

The free event showcased more than 70 businesses in the Greater Riverview area, featuring food tastings and freebies from area businesses, restaurants, and service providers.

"I love this event because it gives everybody a chance to come out and see the best of Riverview and the surrounding area," said Jeanne Bush, left, who serves this year as honorary mayor of Riverview. With her is Tanya Doran, executive director of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce, which hosted its Second Annual Summer Fest at the Winthrop Event Complex on June 20.

"It's been a wonderful turnout," Doran said. "We had about 1,000 attendees last year and this year I believe we accomplished that and better. There's something here for everybody and we're looking forward to next year's event."

"It went very well," said Jay Brodie, of the 2010 Greater Riverveiw Chamber of Commerce Summer Fest, held June 20 at Winthrop. "We got a lot of leads."

High marks, too, he said, for the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce. "The only way to describe the Riverview chamber of commerce is that we're like a family, a great big family." Added his wife, Jackie: "Everybody's really good about helping everybody else out."

Jay and Jackie Brodie own J.B. Windshield Repair and headlight restoration. The company's motto: "We're Just A Stone's Throw Away."

The Second Annual Summer Fest, held June 20 on Father's Day, utilized both the indoor Barn Theatre at Winthrop and the outdoor Winthrop Pole Barn, at 11349 Bloomingdale Avenue in Riverview, just west of Brandon's Bloomingdale community.

"His dad was named Romeo, his mother, Juliet, and I wanted to name him Shakespeare," said Barbara Jones-Keplinger, at the 2010 Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce Summer Fest.

So how did the one-year-old Maltese end up with the name Buster?

"My husband called, 'Buster!' and he ran to it," said Jones-Keplinger, at the vendor table for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Jones-Keplinger is a community resource office with the sheriff's office and ran in 2009 for honorary mayor of Brandon.

Doran said he started the company with his wife after they both served time in corporate America. "My company was acquired by another company and we were interested in starting our own business," he said. "We wanted something to do that was fun for the kids. I like seeing the kids have fun with it."

Doran said he holds high standards for upkeep, with vacuuming, scrub downs, and sanitizing after each event. "I even clean the outsides," he said.

Cliff Kennedy had never intended to enter the family business. His father, Bob Kennedy, has been in the pest control business for 47 years, Cliff Kennedy said. His father owns Bob's Bug Blasters of Riverivew, a do- it-yourself pest control service.

After the oil company he worked for was bought out by another company Cliff Kennedy decided to enter the family business. "To me customers are not contracts," he said. "When we talk to you, give us your name, not your contract number."

Erik Butler, owner and operator of TakeOutButler.com, shows an article about his company in Focus magazine.

Butler launched his business in May 2009, applauding a one-year anniversary in today's difficult economy. "But now we're seeing a lot more black than red and it's exciting," he added.

The business bills itself as "the premier restaurant delivery service for the greater Brandon area and beyond ." As the company's web site puts it: "We pay for the gas, fight the traffic, tackle the parking, and assume the risk. We get wet, get cut-off, and get stuck in line, all for you! Not bad for a $3.99 to $4.99 delivery charge and a gratuity for your wonderful mobile waiter."
