Brandon High School Junior Noelle Mandish takes home the top prize at the Rotary Speech Contest held April 6, 2010 at the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association in Brandon, Fla. She next will compete at the district level championship at Tampa Palms on April 24.
Mandish, who is captain of her school's debate team, competed against three other high school students before Rotarians meeting at the regularly scheduled weekly luncheon of the Brandon Rotary Club. Mandish earned her right to compete by winning the club contest sponsored by the club, which is Brandon's oldest Rotary club.
Also in the competition were Lauren Shanks, Allison Benton, and Michaela Ilyes, the winners, respectively, from contests held before three other area Rotary clubs: Brandon '86 Rotary, South Brandon Rotary, and Sun City Rotary.
With plans to attend the University of Central Florida to major in psychology and minor in political science, Mandish said she hopes, too, in a few years to become a Rotarian herself.
This year's speech contest theme, she said, "is about bringing Rotary to the youth and encoraging them to build a life of service from a young age."
Mandish's first-place finish netted her a check for $235 and a chance to compete for district-level honors.
