It feels wonderful," said Kristin Dasta, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2008. "It timed out perfectly. I'm fresh off my treatments and now I get to participate in [the Relay] in a whole new way."
When she first heard that she had cancer, Dasta said she found it "devastating" and "surprising." Since then, "we've been through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation," Dasta said. "I teach at Bevis Elementary School and I've had lots of people at my school, my church [St. Andrew's United Methodist}, and, of course, my family supporting me."
She cautions women to not put off their mammograms. "Oh, yes!" she said. Focht said that she faced her battle with cancer from a different perspective than many people. "My mother had cancer," she explained. "She was on a pediatrician ward, and to see the eyes of a little kid [stricken with cancer] touched my heart. And I felt if I needed to take a turn, I would take my turn."
Focht said a strong spirit is a potent weapon in the fight against cancer. "I went through with flying colors," she said. We're very passionate about anything for charity," said choral director Melissa Allen. The Randall music group, she added, will be in Washington, D.C., April 14-19, for America Sings. The motto of the effort, Allen noted, is: "To Kids With No Hope From Kids Who Have Hope To Share." The Randall Encore Ensemble has been raising donations for the cause.
