A sampling of the work completed, and the comments made, at the "Sketch, Sip & Supper" fundraiser held June 19 at Center Place prompted event organizers to pledge to hold similar such events in the future.
The event, run by artist Patty Sisco, brought artists and would-be artists together for a night of painting their interpretations of a simple piece crafted by Sisco as a way to demonstrate various painting techniques and brushes. The $40 admission bought a blank canvas, paints, drinks, and food, and helped further the cause of Lisa Rodriguez in her charity bid for honorary mayor of Brandon.
As for the nature of the finished paintings, Rodriguez said diplomatically: "They're all beautiful and they're all different."
Rodriguez is running in support of the
Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association. Rodriguez' sponsoring charity and charity of choice is Center Place.
The successful candidate each year is the one who "buys' his or her way into office with the most money raised for charity. The race is run in June and determined on the morning of the Fourth of July, before the town parade. Both the parade and the mayor's race are run by the Community Roundtable, an umbrella organization founded to further the cause of non-profit groups. Ten percent of the campaign donations go to the Roundtable. Another 10 percent, to the candidate's sponsoring organization. The rest of the money is split among the candidate's chosen causes.
