Guest speakers were Craig Sher, executive chairman of The Sembler Company of St. Petersburg (and a member of the team's ownership group announced in June 2008); and veteran hockey player Dave Andreychuk , captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning's 2004 Stanely Cup team. The luncheon was sponsored by the Leadership Brandon Alumni Association and the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce .

Sher also is a member of the board of A Baseball Community Inc. (also known as the ABC Coalition), a group formed to buttress the Tampa Bay Rays. Sher heads the group's stadium relocation committee.

mypapernow > "I guarantee you will have a much better product on the rink this year," said Craig Sher, a minority owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team. Sher, executive chairman of The Sembler Co. of St. Petersburg, and Irwin Novack, chief executive officer of Kane's Furniture, are minority partners in the group that purchased the National League Hockey team from Bill Davidson and Palace Sports & Entertainment. The group is headed by Oren Koules of Twisted Pictures, the "Saw" films production company.

mypapernow > Craig Sher said the Tampa Bay Lightning ownership will focus a lot on "revenue streams," meaning "more concerts and events" at the St. Pete Times Forum. He added that there will be "some interesting events for the Super Bowl [so] stay tuned." Tampa Bay is the host for Super Bowl XLIII .

mypapernow > Tampa Bay Lightning Community Representative Dave Andreychuk , who turns 45 this month, said as a hockey player he had been going to training camps "up until I was 42," and "I was just as nervous as when I was an 18-year-old." Earlier, team owner Craig Sher told the Leadership Brandon Alumni luncheon attendees about newly signed player Steven Stamkos' comment in response to what he had been up to. Stamkos , 18, of Ontario had replied: "Senior prom, finals and I was drafted No. 1 in the NFL." Andreychuck, born in Hamilton, Ontario and a former professional hockey left winger, played in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning. The luncheon was held Sept. 15, 2008 at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop in Riverview, Fla.

mypapernow > Ron Pierce, director of government relations and community affairs for the Tampa Bay Lightning, is the co-chair of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce's Governement Advisory Council. He serves in that capacity with fellow co-chair, and former Brandon Honorary Mayor, George T. May IV. Both men also serve together on the Brandon Community Advantate Center, a not-for-profit, all-volunteer board overseeing the upcoming civic center, events facility and hurricane shelter sited at Winthrop and funded with state, local and federal dollars.

Andreychuk, born in Hamilton, Ontario, brought veteran leadership to the Tampa Bay Lightning when he signed for the 2001-02 season. Refusing trade offers, Andreychuk stuck with the team and in 2002-03 was appointed team captain by head coach John Tortorella.

mypapernow > As a player, Andreychuk had gone 22 years without being on a Stanley Cup championship team, tying the National Hockey League record with Ray Bourque for longest career without a Stanley Cup showing. That streak ended for Andreychuk in the 2003-04 season, when the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in seven games to win the Stanley Cup at home.
