By LINDA CHION KENNEY: (Original Posting, Nov. 16, 2007) - The Thursday Night Live arts showcase at Winthrop returned Nov. 15 with a focus on recyclable art. The event drew an impressive crowd to the Barn Theatre at Winthrop, where more than 20 artists exhibited and hundreds more came to view and aquire works and contacts. Winthrop unveiled its recycling initiatives, as conceived in great part by Sarah Sullivan, a freshman at Boston University, for her Girl Scout Gold Award. Winthrop's "Save the Species" program includes recycled city bikes "Free to Ride Winthropwide;" a public art program (using recyclable construction materials); an industrial cardboard baler; electric vehicle charging stations; and inexpensive (and earth-friendly) tin recycling receptacles for cans and paper. Thursday Night Live returns Dec. 13, featuring, but not exclusively, the MacDonald Training Center Fine Arts Studios of Tampa Bay and Plant City. A quartet from the Bloomingdale High School chamber orchestra gets set to perform. From left, junior Jacob Keith, sophomore Greg Zegel, senior Alicia Westerhoff and junior Clara Amaral. The orchestra will perform in Beijing, China, next year in time for the Olympics. "Oh, it's a dream come true," said Amaral. "We work hard and we must be really good if we're going to China."

Rachel Oleson with her artist husband, James Oleson Jr., and his cousin Ole Oleson. James' work, "Pressure," signifies "the fight for what you believe in," as reflected in the sword above and the shield below. It includes the top of an oil can, which is especially fitting today, Oleson said, "with the price of oil and gas going up." That's a pressure to which we all can relate. Artist Susan Sahab said she knew that the Tampa arts scene was small, but that coming to the Barn Theatre at Winthrop opened her eyes to the so-called hidden market. "I didn't know there was this many people this passionate about art." In the suburbs, she added, "I didn't think there was anything like this here." She added: "It's interesting to see how art is everywhere, even in places you least expect it."

Watercolorist Anne Drewry, left, and dance studio owner Kim Hall, meet and greet with a common purpose in mind: to support a town that supports the arts. The two are members of the Greater Brandon Arts Council, whose aim is to support and promote the arts in the greater Brandon Area. "Got Culture?"

Lyla L. Haggard's "True Friends." Haggard specializes in "fine and fun art." In her own words: "When I returned to the world of art, having detoured for 25 years into the corporate world, I took to heart the advice of many authors to 'write about what you know' and began to seek creative inspiration from my own experiences. Middle age is now a major focus of my work. I prefer introspective themes and am fascinated by the tension between inner and outer worlds, especially how to see one's inner beauty through a body that is no longer youthful. Artist Craig Todd and his wife, Lori. "I've been drawing all my life and started painting four or five years ago," Craig Todd said. Why? "Just a passion," he said, "and I'm moved by creation."

Photographer David Pritchard explains his photograph, of his great-grandfather's trumpet. He was moved by the impression his great-grandfather's fingerprints made in the instrument's keys.
