Trent Manning was the Best of Show artist at the First Annual Winthrop Art Festival, held May 1-3, 2009, in the Greater Brandon / Riverview area of Hillsborough County, Fla. The festival, hosted by Brandon '86 Rotary and benefitting a number of area charities, opened with a Friday night
Chillville and included a Saturday night
awards ceremony held in conjunction with a Kentucky Derby celebration. For Best of Show, Manning recieved an award of $3,000. In all, the festival issued $7,000 in prize money and grossed more than $22,000.
Volunteers also included representatives from the charities that stood to benefit from the net proceeds collected from the festival: Brandon Life Care Center, Brandon Outreach Clinic, CAIR Flight, Cynthia Pinckney Ministries, ECHO, Everyday Blessings, I AM Cafe, Kids Charity of Tampa Bay, Manna on Wheels, New Horizons Group Home, YMCA, and Young Life.
The artist on his mixed-media work:"I try to use as much salvage material [in my art] as I can," Manning said. "The hunt for the material, actually, has a lot to do with the evolution of the work. You have to learn how to adapt to the material. It kind of teaches you. When that material is used up you move on [to another piece of material] and teach yourself a unique technique."
His art work, he said, "allows me to explore new techniques and new mediums but still under a uniform body of work that has my style to it."
