"We're not only helping the homeless, we're helping the needy families," Pinckney said. "Because of the economic ills right now people need help with their lighting bill, with their water bill. Many, many families, they may have a place to stay but they don't have the means for those other things they need right now. And there are kids who need food."

mypapernow > Cynthia Pinckney and her husband, Leroy, at the Fifth Annual Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner hosted by Cynthia Pinckney Ministries at the Bill Carey Boys & Girls Club in Brandon, Fla. This year, for the first time, volunteers had to undergo a four-hour training session for volunteer certification. More than 250 people received the training and most of them showed up at the Boys & Girls Club on Nov. 27, 2008 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., dishing out meals and clothes, including socks, underwear and shoes. Kids had use of the playground and there was face painting and animal balloons by magician Robert Horning. Free hair cuts and information for community resources also were available.

"It's really awesome how the people come together abnd help us out," said Leroy Pinckney. "The volunteers, the sponsors, are really outstanding."
